In 1990, the Civic Forum coalition of opposition groups won free elections and dissident playwright Vßclav Havel became president. By 1991, the Civic Forum had splintered and Vßclav Klaus's CDP emerged as the dominant party. Klaus was a major force behind the split from Slovakia in 1993. The main division in politics now is between the radical privatizers and those who want a more gradual transition to a market-led economy.
